Who can do this

Any landlord or tenant. Tenants: deposits and illegal rent increases. Landlords: register premises, assess rent, raise rent above 7.5% a year, claim arrears.

What you need

Tick things off as you gather them.

Steps

  1. Contact the Rent Services Unit early, before things get worse.
  2. Landlords: register the rented place. All rented premises must be registered.
  3. Officers talk to both sides and try to settle it.
  4. If not settled, it goes to the Rent Assessment Board for mediation or a hearing. Hearings are held in Kingston, St James, Westmoreland, St Ann and Clarendon.
  5. Don’t go straight to court. The court will send it back to the Board.
